Why do we ask for the 4-digit number on the front of your American Express card or the toll free number on your Visa/Mastercard? The reason we request this information is simple credit card fraud. As you are probably well aware, most credit card fraud involves the use of a credit card number in which the card is not in the physical possession of the perpetrator. By us requiring this information, we can eliminate the potential of someone who is trying to use your card in an unauthorized fashion from doing so. It has been indicated in recent articles that many credit card companies will encourage internet sites to follow a policy similar to what we are currently doing very soon.
